Cavatast – The Cava Tradeshow
Cavatast is one of the most exciting gastronomic/culinary Autumn events in Catalonia. It is the showcase for Barcelona’s cava province, the Penedès. Once a year all cava producers flock to the capital of cava, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, where they literally take over the main street and set up a stall for a weekend and start serving cava. The gentle temperatures in the area make this a fantastic event to enjoy the last of the warm weather outdoors.
The concept: Visitors show up in Sant Sadurí d’Anoia (this year the event takes place from the 10th to the 12th of October), enter the main street and buy one of two types of tickets: cava testing or gastronomy testing (or both). At the 2008 Cavatast edition prices were 4€ for cava and 4.5€ for gastronomy tickets.
Each cava ticket comprises of 1 glass and 3 stubs, to be handed in to each stall of your choice; the idea is that you go to any stall you’re interested in and request your glass to be filled with the type of cava that takes your fancy. The glass itself you can take home with you as a keepsake.
The gastronomy ticket price includes 2 samples of regional organic and delicatessen food -cava and gastronomy stalls alternate along the long street.
One thing to highlight is the services the Cavatast organisation sets up surrounding the event; the area is full of fountains (handy to rinse your cava glass each time!), benches and tables. So you can just sit around, enjoy a conversation with some friends and comfortably eat all your food samples.
Cavatast opened its doors back in 1997, when the local council of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia came up with the idea of putting together a tradeshow which would showcase the region’s products (cava evidently), but also food, bakery, chocolates…
Moreover, Cavatast has grown to offer activities which complement your visit: cava tutorials and workshops, elaboration of cava demonstrations, etc.
This year’s Cavatast 2009 promises to be as exciting as last year’s. For more information, check out Cavatast’s official website and the area’s Tourist information.
