Montjuïc Mountain – A Collection of Sights
Montjuïc can be considered a mountain, although it wouldn’t be the highest mountain ever. It’s big enough to host several monuments, which include an Olympic Stadium. Let’s just start at the beginning.
Starting off at Plaça d’Espanya, at the base of the mountain you have the Venetian Pillars, which are the entry to the ‘Fira de Barcelona’ (the place where they have a lot of trade shows such as ‘Bread and Butter’ or the ‘GSMA’ fair). Once you’ve gone through those, you are walking up to the MNAC, which is the National Museum of Catalan Art. If you take a right before that, you are walking up towards ‘Caixa Fòrum’, an old clothing factory where they now hold plenty of exhibitions.
If you follow that road even further, you reach Poble Espanyol, an old recreational village from the Universal Exposition back in 1928. Behind that village, and behind the MNAC, you have the different parts of the Olympic Stadium, which among others includes the football stadium. Behind the stadium you have the Botanical Gardens.
Then there is still the Miró’s Museum, and if you still haven’t had enough, there is the Castell de Montjuïc even further up, and… I’m sure I could be missing other important sights around there!
The mountain is really full of surprises, which means that you can spend several days just exploring it. If time is of the essence, then you may want to take one of the small buses that’ll take you up the mountain to make things faster, but you don’t want to skim too much as the whole experience of walking everywhere and getting exhausted just adds to the experience.
Enjoy, and good luck!
