El Xampanyet – Where The Truck Broke Down

Xampanyet

El Xampanyet is one of those quaint little places in the Borne with a history and a future. The place is always jam-packed, and if you get a table you can count yourself lucky – so best come early!

The story behind the place is also very interesting. The owner used to drive between the vineyards and the stores in Barcelona, delivering bottles of cava. One day, his truck broke down right in front of what now is El Xampanyet, and he decided to just stay there and buy the place.

Now, you can enjoy a glass of cava, or their own xampanyet (which I can highly recommend!), with some of their tapas. As in most places, you can enjoy some tomato bread, or some nice Iberian hams whilst drinking a nice refreshing glass of bubbly.

One of the things you are sure to notice is that the décor looks very dated. For me this just adds to the charm of the place. It only shows how old the place really is and for how long people have been enjoying drinking there. Another indicator of this is the joviality of the owner with some of his regular patrons. “Cheers” almost comes to mind, as he really does know a lot of the people who regularly attend the place, tourists excluded of course.

The place is also very easy to find, just off Passeig del Borne, and in the same street as the Picasso museum. It is very small though, so don’t feel bad if you just walk past it the first time. If you want a way to recognize it, it’s the place with a lot of people inside, and it’s not a museum!

Cheers!
